Presented by James Patterson’s new children’s imprint, this deliciously creepy horror novel has a storyline inspired by the Ripper murders and an unexpected, blood-chilling conclusion…

Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord’s daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life.

Against her stern father’s wishes and society’s expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle’s laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world.

The story’s shocking twists and turns, augmented with real, sinister period photos, will make this dazzling, #1 New York Times bestselling debut from author Kerri Maniscalco impossible to forget.

Review:

This book has been highly recommended by the Titas of @bookstagramers_ph and I wish I’ve read this sooner! I was actually scared to read this book because of the hype around it but this definitely was worth the hype!

This was set in the 1800s so I loved how the MC, Audrey Rose, was such a fierce and sassy girl who doesn’t care about what society thinks. She’s a bit eccentric because she loves helping her Uncle Jonathan in his lab, experimenting on cadavers (not something that’s so common for women in that time period). There she met Thomas Cresswell, the charming and smart apprentice of her Uncle. I loved their playful and witty banter as enemies to lovers trope’s my fave.

It was hard for me to guess who Jack the Ripper was and I was really surprised to know who it was towards the end of the book. This was an amazingly dark but fun read.

Favorite Quotes:

“Those who deserve respect are given it freely. If one must demand such a thing, he’ll never truly command it.”

“Some ghosts should remain good and buried, Niece.”
“And some ghosts come back to haunt us, Uncle.”

“Seeing the truth was never easy, especially when it revealed those closest to us could be monsters hidden in plain sight.”

Soundtrack: Suddenly by Jeremy Passion

  2. I love the idea of this book and the story behind it all – It’s quite creepy to think nobody ever found out Jack the Rippers identity, to this day even! Perhaps one day it will be revealed but who knows. The case definitely lends itself well to fiction and this sounds like a great story. Thanks for sharing Jen 💛
